“Belief in an external world independent of the perceiving subject is the basis for all natural science.”

Albert Einstein

What is science?

According to NASA, Science consists of observing the world by watching, listening, observing, and recording.

Thus, science has 3 distinct features:

  • Measurable

  • Repeatable

  • Observable

What scientific principle or law requires a scientist to report their findings honestly?

Does Science Argue for or Against God?

Romans 1: 20-22

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.

The Scientific Method

It all begins with an idea.

What do you want to investigate?

  • A predicted conclusion or finding

  • Stated assumptions

  • An observable experiment

OBSERVATIONAL SCIENCE

VERSUS

HISTORICAL SCIENCE

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ……………

Ken Ham shared a teaching illustration years ago that stuck with me. It defines the difference between historical science and observational science.

Let’s say that you walk into a room and notice an individual peeling apples for 30 minutes. You observe that it takes 30 seconds to peel an apple and 60 apples are peeled in 30 minutes. (OBSERVATIONAL SCIENCE)

You walk into another room and see 1000 peeled apples.

How long did it take to peel this many apples?

o   You didn’t witness (observe) the peeling. (HISTORICAL SCIENCE)

What assumptions must you make to formulate a response?

  • same number of people peeling

  • same efficiency

  • same tool to peel

  • same production rate

  • same environmental conditions

  • did the peel on the apple always exist?

  • etc.

IF ANY OF YOUR ASSUMPTIONS ARE INCORRECT OR INACCURATE, THE LENGTH OF TIME TO PEEL 1000 APPLES MAY BE VASTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE REALITY OF WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED.

Can a person scientifically prove that Abraham Lincoln existed?

OF COURSE NOT. ONE MUST RELY ON HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS AND EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS. YOU CAN’T RECREATE HIS EXISTENCE AND ACTIONS AS A PRESIDENT IN A LABORATORY.

IF JESUS EXISTED 2000 YEARS AGO AS THE SON OF GOD, YOU CAN’T SCIENTIFICALLY PROVE THAT EITHER.

The Mouse Trap Argument

Consider the human body from a evolutionary perspective: What came first? the blood ………. arteries / veins ……… heart ……… brain to control ……. the lungs to oxygenate the blood??

The mouse trap must have ALL components in place to function properly. Similarly, how would the circulatory system evolve instantaneously to function properly? OR the brain to control all organs?
